Episode 2.53 – Crunchy Calamari with Daniel Braum

Welcome to the Ink Heist podcast, which is devoted to dark genre fiction, featuring hosts Rich Duncan, Shane Douglas Keene, Laurel Hightower and a whole bevy of authors and other interesting guests for your listening and enlightening pleasure. We are a very irreverent, often linguistically explicit broadcast so we highly recommend you use discretion when listening around easily influenced young ones or anyone who is easily offended. We would like to thank the band Secret Smoker for allowing us to use their song “Crushed by Air” to kick-off and finish the podcast.

This week, we were joined by a special co-host, Matt Wildasin! For those who don’t know him, Matt is a horror author who recently released his new novel The Demon in the Glass , hosts the Grindcast podcast, will be one of the hosts of the upcoming The Ghost Writers Podcast and was also a part of The Horror Show with Brian Keene. We’re excited to have him on the show as we are big fans of everything he’s been a part of. The four of us had a great conversation with returning guest Daniel Braum about his latest short story collection, Underworld Dreams, which is out now through Lethe Press. Daniel is a master of short fiction and his previous collections are favorites here at Ink Heist and it was a treat to read an early copy of Underworld Dreams. The synopsis for this collection describes the stories as “strange” and that’s probably the best way to describe Daniel’s style. He weaves together elements from a wide variety of genres to create unique stories that defy easy classification other than to say they are compulsively readable and utterly captivating. The stories in this collection thrive on the tension between the supernatural and psychological while warping traditional timelines and senses of reality. The best example of this is the titular story which is easily one of the best of the year. Looking for a great collection to dive into for your Fall reading? Snag a copy of this immediately.

Throughout the course of the episode, we talked about writing closer to your fears, witnessing strange things in Australia’s sacred sites, ghost stories, Hallmark Christmas films and a lot of other stuff you don’t wanna miss! We had a blast with this episode and we think you will too.
